ARIA – (Acrylic, oil pastel and oil on canvas, 80×64 cm)

In Aria, Carriero draws inspiration from Modigliani’s Donna dagli occhi azzurri. Set against a black background, the ethereal, long-necked woman in Carriero’s work appears almost superimposed against the backdrop; both part of it and distanced from it, enabling the figure to take on a haunting quality and, as in the original, to dominate both the frame and the viewer’s gaze.
